Job description:
Purpose
The position of Geotechnical Field Assistant, whilst working closely with the Geotechnical Technicians, Geotechnical Engineer, and Senior Geotechnical Engineer, will play a crucial role in completing the daily physical activities required by the team. This includes, but is not limited to monitoring pit of wall stability, geotechnical data collection and maintenance of systems. This position will be provided with training, supervision and mentorship by the geotechnical engineer(s). The geotechnical field assistant will fulfil the daily inspection requirements, data collection and monitoring and provide this information to the geotechnical engineers. This will enable the engineers to optimise slope design, monitoring, problematic area identification. The position will allow enhanced strategic input into the mine planning and reduce the risk of a safety incident relating to ground instability.
Key Accountabilities
Movement of core trays & measurement of RQD on diamond drill core.
Transportation of people and materials to the point of need.
Basic maintenance of monitoring equipment.
Removal & replacement of monitoring equipment as required by blasting/ mining activities.
Completion of Point Load testing on pit and core rock samples.
Organisation of core logging facilities.
Completion of basic pit inspections and entry into the database.
Spotting activities during highwall remediation or similar activities.
Collection of samples from pit and prepare for testing.
Collection of high quality photographic records of all drill core and pit/ waste dump areas.
Construction & physical labour of monitoring infrastructure.
Collection of readings from monitoring equipment.
Completion of regular checks on geotechnical equipment and vehicles for their safe operation.
Working Conditions/Environment
Minera Panama is situated in the Colon province of Panama. This position is based at the mine site.
Employees are expected to reside in the local town and commute to work daily or as per the company’s policies.
The roster is residential as per the company schedule.
The position is nominally as day-shift role, however night shift work covering can be required.
Working Relationships
The Geotechnical Field Assistant reports directly to the Geotechnical Engineer(s) and works closely with all members of the Geotechnical Section. It is vital that the incumbent creates and maintains positive relationships. They will be provided with the relevant training and skills to complete the tasks required,
The role requires regular interaction with both internal and external parties such as training, safety, mining production or contractors. The incumbent should be skilled in effective communication, negotiation and stakeholder management.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Skills
Driving license is required.
Practical skills and experience in one of the following is well regarded: Construction, shotcrete application, tunnelling, ground support, carpentry, electrical work, welding, building or mechanical maintenance
Ability or experience organising project work under guidance of an engineer
Practically minded and ability to solve problems
Experience
Mining, construction or heavy industry experience well regarded.
Technical Ability / knowledge
Basic to intermediate computer knowledge with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook is of benefit
Ability to perform basic math operations and use simple measurement devices such as tape measures.
Some knowledge of mining processes is of benefit
Ability to rapidly learn new tasks either technical or practical in nature
